Recurring Dreams: The Shower

Last night I dreamed I was trying to take a shower.

The shower dream is one of my recurring dreams and always leaves me feeling a little stressed out when I wake up.

Here's how the dream goes.

I need to take a shower but obstacles continuously present themselves and the shower ultimately never happens. I spend the whole dream (which in the dream is usually a whole day) just trying to take a shower so I can move on with my day.

Here are the various obstacles that present themselves.

No Privacy
Sometimes the shower is in the middle of a dining room while a dinner party is in progress. Of course guests assure me they will not be disturbed by the noise or the steam rising from above the shower curtain and encourage me to take a shower, but I don't ever take them up on it.

Other times the shower is in a room where one or more of the walls are floor to ceiling windows. Usually the view is stunning and I consider showering just to enjoy the view.

The short shower stall always presents another privacy issue. This shower is usually outdoors, in an area where lots of people are coming and going (think Grand Central Station.) The stall is tall enough to provide adequate coverage for a person of average height. But of course, I am not a person of average height, so the shower stall would leave me exposed in ways that would certainly make me very uncomfortable.

Shower Occupied
Another shower dream obstacle is the occupied shower. Sometimes the person is just taking an extra long shower and I have to wait. If I leave for one second, that person will finish and another person will jump in. It never fails.

When it finally is my turn to dream shower, the hot water has run out due to the excessive length of all the other showerer's showers. So I wait for the water to warm up and then, guess what?

Someone else gets in the shower before me.

Unable to Remove Clothes
This is without a doubt the most disturbing part of the whole dream because now I've finally gotten into a private shower and it's my turn. The shower can happen.

Except I can't remove my clothes.

Sometimes I can take off clothes, but more and more keep appearing underneath as if I've layered everything I own onto my body. I keep stripping off shirts, only to see another shirt beneath it while a big pile of shirts grows on the floor next to me.

Ahhhh!

Then I wake up in a panic and spend the next 30 minutes doing calm breathing and trying to relax.

I suppose I've had to wait to shower in real life. I've lived in college dorms after all.

But I've never had to wait all day.

And once I saw a shower that had a wall (more like window!) that was floor to ceiling clear glass. But I was not invited to shower in it.

I just don't know what to make of it, other than I'm uptight and concerned about my modesty.

I have a similar reoccurring dream only mine is about going to the bathroom.

Maybe the dream is about something you want/need and are having a hard time getting it.

You mean this dream could symbolize the Macbook I want? Hmm, very interesting. But does this mean I will never get it?

Shower

To dream that you are taking a shower in clear, fresh water, symbolizes spiritual or physical renewal and forgiveness. You are washing the burdens out of your life. Alternatively, the dream may be a metaphor that you are "showering" someone with gifts or love.

To dream that you are taking a shower in muddy, dirty water, signifies misfortune and minor losses.

To dream that you (or someone) is showering with their clothes on, suggests that even though you (or someone) may change your outer appearances, it does not change who you are on the inside. Alternatively, your dream may indicate that you are unwilling to let your guard down. You are still keeping up a protective barrier between you and others.

The site also says that you are your own best interpreter of your dreams, because something may have a different meaning for you than for someone else. So, if I were to offer an interpretation, I would say you are feeling pressure to change, but I would ever suggest an interpretation for someone else's dream. :-) I will say, though, that I think protective barriers are good.

Good luck!

Are you feeling frustrated about anything? Not being able to get your clothes off and having to wait for the shower shows frustration and impatience.

I have a lot of dreams about my teeth. The other night I kept chomping away on my teeth guard because in my dream I had these big narly wooden, brown teeth that stuck out and I couldn't close my mouth properly. Luckily I woke up and realized it was my teeth guard and that my teeth were just fine. What a relief. Aren't dreams so funny and bizarre? Sometimes I think, where in the world did THAT come from?

I take that back. Maybe not impatience. You got me thinking now! For me, if I was having these dreams, I'm sure it would be related to the fact that everyday I feel the pressure of getting everything done that needs to be and trying to keep up. Sometimes I don't get everything done. Something unexpected usually gets in the way of that or I just simply run out of time. Sometimes it feels like I'll never catch up. Needless to say, I have a lot of frustration-type dreams similar to yours where I am trying to get somewhere or do something and it never happens because things prevent it. Well, I'm rambling so bye.

So so Funny afton! :) Just when I thought it was as funny as it would get, it kept getting funnier and I would laugh harder!!! Greg was sitting next to me on the couch and kept saying, "What....What? What is SO FUNNY!"

I think we've all had a dream where we felt frustrated like that! Can you imagine a shower in the middle of your dining room full of guests! BAH!!!

Will you tell Erika/Ryan that she should have her dentist check her nightguard and make sure it's balanced. Sometimes a simple adjustment can make you not grind so much. (The ideal fitting nightguard, in theory, will help you not grind...). Some people grind even with it balanced but teeth dreams usually mean you're grinding a lot. I always asked my patients to bring their nightguards in with their cleanings every 6 months for a quick check along with the cleaning. (I'd also clean the nightguard...)

I have recurring dreams about being in college and forgetting where my class is, or forgetting to go to class, or forgetting to study for a test or write a paper...I have no theories other than to attest to having unfulfilling reocurring dreams. Ahh...and the flat tire post killed me. i think you are DARLING.

oh yes Chelsea, the college dream is the other recurring dream I have. Most of the time I forget I have a class and remember at the end of the semester when it's time for the final. So stressful.

That's unusual. I wonder if it's like the dream of being somewhere in public naked? very unsettling! I like to think of my showers very calming and maybe you're looking for calmness and peace. My Steam Shower has a way of turning a stressful day into a calm day.

OMG I have that same reocurring shower dream. I have the same college dream as you too. I also have one where I get a call from my old middle school indicating that I forgot to clean my locker out on the last day of school (40 years ago)and they need me to come in and take care of it and when I get there I am sweating bullets because I can't remember the old locker combination. I thought I was nuts. Thanks for sharing.

I am glad I saw this post. With some slight variations this is also my same recurring shower dream. Last night I was in a house with huge bathrooms. They were so nice. But like you I had so many obstacles to taking a shower. I have a lot going on in my life right now. My job and apartment lease are up at the end of May. It probably has something to do with these transitions. That is on my mind a lot.

I've been looking for a meaning behind the clothing thing everywhere... I had a dream last night that I got into the shower but I could not- no matter how hard i tried- get all of my clothes off. i was already in the shower, and every time i would take off one article of clothing, another would appear, even if i had already previously taken it off. it was a vicious cycle and wouldn't stop... i don't know how to interpret it.

I have had that one

I have had this one, also, only high school, not college

Omg I have the exact recurring dream and usually within the mix of trying to take a shower anywhere and everywhere throughout the dream I am also packing a bag full of my stuff things, all sorts, and this is the only other recurring dream topic I have. Ive read so much on interpretation on the showering yet nothing seems to feel correct.

So strange. For as long as I can remember, I've been having the exact same dream about trying to get a shower, obstacles, lack of privacy, etc. (minus the getting undressed part). Just had it again last night...the reason I decided to google it...again!
I haven't been able to put my finger on the reason for this recurring dream and have yet to find anything on the "dream interpretation" sites that fits this exact dream and/or makes sense. Thankfully, my house has 3 showers in working condition with privacy and everything! Lol.

I have the SAME dream! I'm looking to take a shower, someone comes in, or no soap, no towel, I cannot find my clothes, shampoo, people keep walking in, door wont lock, water wont turn on - had it all my life. But I feel annoyed, "watched" and violated. I often wonder if I was sexually abused as a very young child and cant remember...
